What is Mastering?

Mastering audio, often simply referred to as mastering, is the final step in the production process of recording music or any form of audio content. It involves the preparation and transfer of the audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device (the master), from which all copies will be produced (via methods such as pressing, duplication, or replication). Mastering requires critical listening and is performed using tools and techniques to finalize the sound of the recording so that it translates well across various playback systems and media formats.

The Purpose of Mastering

Audio mastering serves multiple purposes. It ensures that the audio meets the technical standards required for distribution and playback on all devices and media formats. It involves adjusting the final levels, enhancing sonic qualities, and ensuring consistency across an album or EP. The process can correct mix balance issues, enhance particular frequencies, and create a cohesive listening experience from start to finish. Additionally, mastering adds the final polish to a recording, making it sound professional and ready for consumption by the audience.
